Unless you’re hiding under a rock, you must have heard that Kanye West and his choir will be performing at Sunday Service in Joel Osteen’s Lakewood church this weekend.
The “Jesus is King” rapper and his Sunday Service choir that normally travels with him will perform at Lakewood’s evening service in Houston, according to a report from TMZ.
Kanye’s choir specializes in flipping very popular hip-hop and R&B songs into gospel records. Some of which include Ginuwine’s “So Anxious” and Chaka Khan’s “Sweet Thing.”
It’s unclear which songs Kanye will decide to flip on Sunday, or if he will end up just doing his new album and back catalogue. Osteen’s invite will likely appeal to a younger demographic, and other churches that can afford to pay Kanye the rumored $300,000 he will be receiving are sure to use this same tactic.
Here’s a list of mega churches that will eventually reach out for a Kanye feature.
1-Hillsong Church
This is the first church that comes to mind when I think about celebrity Christians. Hillsong has been visited and frequented by the likes of Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and even his sister-in-law Kourtney Kardashian.
The church is also known for its music and won a Grammy for the song “What a Beautiful Name.”
Their celebrity-level pastors like Carl Lentz have been clearly influenced by Kanye over the years in both dress and music styles so it seems like having him there would be a good match. They also have large venues to host him in, and that’s important considering how many people a Kanye appearance would bring out.
2-The Potter’s House Church (T.D. Jakes)
The church, led by Bishop T.D. Jakes, has been involved in releasing gospel music over the years, and using performing arts to reach and inspire people.
The church has campuses all over the country including places like Denver, Los Angeles and Texas, so it’s likely that they have a venue that Kanye could bring his choir to.
They also would be able to foot the bill considering what it takes to budget a church of that magnitude. Kanye even defended Jakes’ position on scripture at one of his Sunday services.
3-Elevation Church (Steven Furtick)
Steven Furtick’s Elevation Church might want to tap into Kanye for his fashion expertise. The rapper/producer extraordinaire fully dedicated his life to fashion around ten years ago and has transformed his Yeezy brand into a billion dollar company in 2019.
Furtick’s church also uses fashion and merchandise sales to generate revenue. Kanye might be just the person they need to take their hats, sweatshirts, and t-shirts to the next level.
The church also has 71 locations, so it’s likely that they would be able to afford Kanye West and his choir at their current rate, unless of course Mr. West decides to raise it a bit.
4-Vous Church (Rich Wilkerson Jr.)
To quote Justin Bieber, this one here is a no brainer.. Wilkerson not only has a relationship with Kanye, but married him and Kim Kardashian back in 2014.
The church hosts regular conferences that have been attended by celebrities like Bieber, and it seems to have that rockstar appeal. Based on their friendship alone, it’s likely than Kanye might throw Rich a bone and perform a Sunday Service for his youth and young adults. They also seem to move a lot of merch, so having Kanye there would probably boost sales.
Rich has also preached at Kanye’s own Sunday Service event, so the rapper owes him a favor.
5-The Roman Catholic Church (Pope Francis)
I promise you guys I’m not trolling. This is one of the oldest institutions known to man that is struggling for relevancy in 2019. The Catholic Church could attract converts, or even bring some lapsed Catholics back into the fold by hosting some type of event, or aligning with Kanye West somehow.
He boasted about his “Catholic style” back on “The College Dropout” in 2004 while talking about his Jesus piece so there’s definitely some influence there. Kanye also isn’t aligning himself with any Protestant denominations and seems to be someone who wants to bring all Christians together based on some of his previous statements.
The Catholic Church, with it’s vast wealth, could afford Kanye and his choir ten times over and might need to have him perform for free at St. Patricks Cathedral in New York City. Now that would be a game-changer! “Jesus is King” has already captured the attention of a lot of Catholic fans, according to the Catholic Herald.
